Auto-register IP on validate controls whether a validation request can automatically register a new IP for a license. This setting mainly affects first-use experience for customers.
Auto-register IP on validate only works when Track IP on validate is also on. If validate requests are not participating in IP tracking, KeyPort has no tracking path available to register that first IP.

When it is on

  • The first qualifying validation request can register the IP automatically
  • A customer can often start using the product without manual IP setup
  • Later requests still have to respect the license’s IP limits and blacklist rules

When it is off

  • Validation does not automatically add a new IP
  • The IP must already be known or added through another flow before validation succeeds
  • This is better for tighter approval-based environments

Example

Imagine a brand-new license with no IPs registered yet:
  • If auto-register is on, the first customer machine can validate and become the registered IP
  • If auto-register is off, that same machine is rejected until you add or approve the IP by another process

When to use it

Turn it on when:
  • your product is self-serve
  • you want smoother activation for first-time customers
  • most customers should be able to start immediately
Turn it off when:
  • every machine should be pre-approved
  • you run high-security or manually managed licenses
  • support staff should control which machines are allowed
Auto-registration does not bypass blacklist rules or IP caps. It only changes whether a new IP can be added automatically during validate.
